I've made it fairly obvious through the use of pathetically veiled clues that I have recently scored a weekly column here in A-town. Some of you have been asking where you can read said work. Unfortunately, they aren't being uploaded to the news website (yet - I'm planning on barracking to have this changed...) so I'll just have to reproduce them for you here.
I won't post them until at least a day or two after publication, because it seems like the fair thing to do. Remember Adelaidians, if you want first squiz at it, pick up a copy of the Sunday Mail on, well, Sundays, and turn to page 112.
Today's column comes to you from the 18th November and marked my 'debut'.

Queer As Folk
First published in the Sunday Mail, Adelaide

There's a scene during an episode of The Office in which Tim and Gareth are mulling over that old logic chestnut involving a chicken, a fox, a bag of corn and how the farmer may best ferry them across the river.
Gareth: Why can't he just get his wife to keep an eye on them?
Tim: He doesn't have a wife.
Gareth: All farmers have wives.
Tim: Not this one, he's gay.
Pause.
Gareth: Well, he shouldn't be allowed near animals then.
The brilliance of Ricky Gervais' humour stems mainly from its ability to make the viewer squirm uncomfortably at the recognisability of his characters. After all, Gareth isn't so unique. He's obsessed with the army, has career ambition and likes to label his stationery. He's also a pratt with a stupid haircut who honestly believes himself cosmopolitan because he refers to black people as 'coloureds' instead of 'darkies' and happens to think gay people are, well, a bit queer.
We laugh not just because Gareth's concerns are completely insane, but because there are an unfortunate number of people who actually think this way - as if same sex attraction is the equivalent of wanting to roger the entire farm six ways from Sunday!
Today, approximately 20 queer couples are donning their handbags and gladrags to attend Loved Up as part of the Feast Festival. On Montefiore Hill, these couples will pledge their commitment to each other as part of a mass gay wedding. Good on them I say. No matter which way I look at it, I just can't see what's so offensive and frightening about two loved up queer folk getting hitched.
Okay, so there's the traditional marriage argument. Marriage exists to mark the union between a man and woman, under God, please go off and procreate etc. But denying gay people the right to marry based on their exclusion from the traditional religious model should logically mean also denying straight couples who choose not to have God present.
I'm no theologian, but a quick stab in the dark seems to imply that for a marriage to be truly traditional, it would require some recognition of the woman as masculine property, the payment of a hefty dowry and the saving of nocturnal fumblings for a terrifying treat on the wedding night. Given that more and more couples are choosing to leave religious deities off the guest list, how can we still legislate based on the notion of tradition?
Frankly, considering the oppressive preaching heaped upon us from the self appointed saviours of our souls, I'm more offended by the idea of two fundamental evangelicals hitching their wagons to each other and breeding than I am by the concept of Mr and Mr Smith.
There are only five nations in the world that recognize same sex marriages and 15 that allow same sex civil unions (including some states in the US). Australia, the lucky country, the greatest country on earth according to some, recognises neither. A Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) report released in June revealed that there are 58 instances of discrimination against same sex couples in the Australian federal law, most of which amount to financial disadvantages.
Of course, with an election drawing ever nearer it's unsurprising to see the flailing government suddenly remember that the pesky gays can vote. When Malcolm Turnbull realised that whole communities of that lot lived in his electorate, he announced that a re-elected Coalition would allow interdependent same sex couples to share each other's public pensions and superannuation.
Even if I wasn't such a cynic, I'd realise that it's a blatant attempt on the part of the Coalition to snaffle votes. It's not enough for Turnbull and co to think gays are just a bit wrong - it seems they also think they're all stupid. Newsflash Turnbull - your pals can't spend 11 years telling an entire group of people that they're deviants and then expect them to wag their tails just because you threw them a bone.
It's high time that Australia backed up all this 'greatest country in the world' hoopla. Honestly, aren't there greater things to worry about than whether or not your next door neighbour is only interested in Dorothy as a friend? We're none of us perfect and that whole Biblical bit about not casting stones is quite inspired.
My mother always said that it's easy to keep someone in a trashcan, but to make sure they stay there you have to sit on the lid. Answer? No one moves anywhere. Let's embrace each other's difference!
After all, you know what they say. There's nowt so queer as folk...

Mail received: Two letters, both nice. I was quite surprised, let me tell you. Wait til you hear about some of the hate mail I got for columne the seconde...
UPDATE: I'll be on Amanda Blair's 5AA (1395 on the AM dial) talkback show tomorrow at around 1pm if y'all want to tune in. I imagine I'll make great mention of being a big scary feminist.
Peace out (anonymice, don't even be tempted to beat the 'gay marriage is wrong' horse again..200 comments of claptrap from both sides is enough for anyone to wade through.)

40 apples:
I read this when you posted it on FB, and I think you did a brilliant job for your first column.
You got hate mail for the second? Wow. Just, wow.
Word.
Well said.
That's brilliant! Is there going to be a podcast of your interview?
OMG I am listening to Bob Francis right now - I am having Media Monitors flash backs arrrrrgh
is it today that you're on the oidar? Or did I miss it?
Wow, a newspaper column that actually matches the standard of opinion writing present in the blogosphere. Your next batch of hate mail is bound to come from Devine; Deveny; & Overingon. How the fuck did they ever score gigs on papers?
In case Kathryn wants to do the maths, the formula for futility I used is ((number of thrusts*force of thrust)/(total time in seconds))*(chance of conception). So a 5 minute session of 50 thrusts of 5 Newtons = ((50*5)/300)*0 = 0
Whilst I agree with the gist of the above posted by Anon, I really do think that the formula should be divided by the chance of conception...
The way it's written says that there is zero futility.
I would say the rate of futility would be infinite.
Good point,
divide by zero error, I like it
I think its funny that most of the talk here is about males only. This is interesting when compared to the attitude to lesbians in Nazi Germany. The Nazi's didn't persecute lesbians as much as they were considered more easily cured.
That's because it's masturbation and not penetration.
Also, if the girls are hot they need encouragment rather than cure.
Even Nazi Germany appreciated this universal law.
Lad Litter, no knocking Deveny. She is a class above the others you mentioned and should not be mentioned in the same breath.
Well done Ms Apple.
I thought that as an opinion columnist the aim was to strike a nerve by tackling a controversial issue in order to draw widespread support or condemnation so people buy more copies.
Does the lukewarm response (2 nice letters) mean you've failed in this task? I say Yes, and think it is funny that it seems that absolutely no one cares, probably because gay people can winge all they want and nothing will get done because the rest of the world thinks it is a non issue.
Didn't you hear the woman? She said "don't" try and start the debate again. I know simple instruction is hard for some people to comprehend, but for the sake of all that is good in the world, please try.
Also, it was her first column in an Adelaide paper. Try using logic instead of your tiny tiny brain before commenting again.
Hello again bec.
Good to hear from you again.
I wasn't trying to start "that" debate again. Merely using descriptive metaphors to point out how futile continuing "that" debate would be.
Then I merely pointed out how funny it is that a paper wasted almost a full page on an opinion column on an issue that no one cares about.
You rock Audrey.
Me thinks there may be comments missing
OK, she shouldn't have been lumped in with those other two but just the same, I will knock Deveny, Rebekka. Haven't we gone past self-absorbed poorly-researched whimsical musings in colour-opinion pieces? But my main point was that there appear to be higher standards in the blogosphere than in papers. You wouldn't be game to post some of the piffle that gets published under bylines.
Now that Nelson has decided to be a little more liberal in his thinking on gay rights (although not to the point of recognizing marriage, IVF or adoption for gay couples), it will be interesting to see if Rudd's government treats all of our citizens equitably.
I enjoyed your article, Audrey. Congratulations.
Miss Audrey, how very topical this is - given that Nelson just promised same-sex couples economic rights. Part of the 'new' liberal approach...
You know you've 'made it' when you get hate mail.
Nice work, Apples.
I caught your second column on Online Opinion today. Ummm wow, what's up with that Leigh dude!!! Vitriolic! yeouwch.
I'm currently watch the doco on abc "Rampant". Its amazing hearing about laws from 20 years ago that are just so regressive that they make you gasp. No needle distribution, no licensing of brothels, illegal sodomy. Its amazing that these doctors went out on limbs like they did to try and prevent an epidemic and just think how things might have been if people weren't brave enough to risk the jail term in order to distribute clean needles to drug users and condoms to sex workers and the gay population.
Anyway, my point is, I hope its not going to be another 20 years before we look back and go OMG I can't believe that in the 00's we didn't allow gay equality.
PS I'm glad you are posting on line so I don't have to continue to sell my soul and buy the Sunday Mail.
Oh and how cool is Ita Buttrose!!!
"Anyway, my point is, I hope its not going to be another 20 years before we look back and go OMG I can't believe that in the 00's we didn't allow gay equality."
And maybe it will be less than 20 years after that when look back and go I can't believe that in the 20's we didn't allow equality for human-animal couples.
Yeah.
Right.
That comment MADE SO MUCH SENSE.
well, if you learned to read...
I'm torn.. do i respond to the anonymous or ignore him as the ignorant troll that he is. Ohh the temptation to attempt to fight his "human-animal" straw man.
backing away from the keypads.
OH BOY EVERYONE.. aren't trolls fun!!
Are you saying that if we have completely equal rights for same sex couples, people who want to do dirty things to animals won't crawl out of the woodwork in the same way homosexuals have over the last 20 years and demand an end to the persecution of those who really really love their pets. Then a new generation of people with nothing better to do with than sit in coffee shops writing crap will pick up the crusade for free love everywhere (even rovers anus) and try to change the world in their own useless way.
Then a new generation of people with nothing better to do with than sit in coffee shops writing crap...
...kind of what you're doing here, having this little argument with yourself. Go outside and pick a fight with a real live human.
I have a real job, and a family. I know what it means to do a real days work. I don't spend my days sitting around complaining about the government isn't doing enough to create opportunities for arts students (so more people can't get paid for not contributing to society).
I'd just like to say that I didn't mean the bit about a new generation of people, I meant a new generation of loudmouth lefties.
It's fun to stay at the YMCA...
I don't know what you mean by that
Sorry, I thought I'd end the conversation by singing a gay anthem. It seemed to make as much sense as some of your former comments. Apologies, but I don't feel like it's possible to have any kind of intelligent discussion with someone who compares people like me to those who fuck animals. Peace out and have many fun parties in Bigot Town.
I wasn't comparing you to people who have their dastardly way with animals. I don't know you well enough to make that kind of comment.
I was comparing the people (like audrey) who are spending their time and effort to fight for equal rights for gay couples now to people who will spend their time and effort to fight for equal rights for inter species couples.
Anon does have a point though, people like Audrey always need some cause to champion that goes against the moral grain of the majority. When the gay issue is resolved Audrey may have grown up but there will be others who need to break down the taboos.
Yes, that is exactly my point. Thank you, its good to see a sane poster on here who is not a closed minded bigot.
"It seemed to make as much sense as some of your former comments."
Wow, some of the women on here are really self righteous. You feminists gotta realize that when someone doesn't agree with you it doesn't mean they make no sense. It means you actually have to justify what you are saying. It looks like every time you are faced with someone who doesn't agree with you, you either say they make no sense or you pretend they said something they didn't.
Oh noes!!! A different opinion! What do I doooooos???
Anon @ 12:07, do you think it's a waste of time to fight for the rights of other human beings? I guess that whole civil rights thing back in the sixties was a BIG waste of time then.
Two adults having consensual sex is nothing like an adult having sex with an animal. From a basic legal point of view, an animal cannot give consent.
From a moral point of view, comparing homosexual sex to bestiality is so far off the wall it's laughable.
I note that one of the anonymice earlier said that sex between men was wrong, but sex between hot women should be encouraged. This seems to me to lack conviction for the whole 'anti homo' cause.
Scotty, everyone on here is calling everyone else names, so I don't know where the anon above you gets off on calling his opponents 'bigots'. I suspect he doesn't know what it actually means, or he is throwing it around willy nilly in some vain attempt at ironic humour.
There's a book in the North Terrace library called 'The Hell With All That', which is a series of articles by a quietly feminist author. The one where she talks about marriage, and what it all means, etc, and the way marriages and weddings have been conducted through the ages (ie, quietly, and a few sangers at your folks before the happy couple nipped of quickly to finally consumate) was really interesting.
It's a good book from the POV of an ordinary everyday person, who happens to be female, trying to navigate the tricky waters of feminism and empowerment in an ordinary world. Well, I liked it, anyway.
