Audrey, I thought of you last night when I debased myself by watching the filth that is the C10 late news. Everytime Ms Sully spouted another line of this despicable abomination, I thought "Audrey is going to have a field day with this". I'm only surprised it took you til so late in the day to post.

It's disgusting, and abhorrent. I want to ring up Brooke and offer to be her BFF to protect her from the disgusting judicial system.

The little bastard admitted to it, and he gets off so that he can still go work overseas. Friends in high fucking places indeed.

Wanker.

To Violence Against Women, Australia says IT'S ONLY OK IF YOU'RE A CELEBRITY.

I think that something like this shows how the judicial system and certain elements of Australian culture (as you pointed out, true blue and all) really values women. Not much, I'm afraid. What if Matty the bratty had hit a CHILD? He'd be locked up for weeks. But a woman--who cares? oh, and just to prove how disgusting Australian culture can be, if he hit a MAN he would be a MAN. That's not a great result for men either. I think Matty should be sent down to the Working Women's centre and get taught a lesson or two about how abusive men interfere with women's work and lives. on second thought, maybe he could be a spokesperson for Centreshit, who aren't very 'understanding' towards women who can't go to work because they get beaten up if they do.

it's fucking disgusting. great post audrey.

mskp said...

lucky he didn't give brooke a sim card - then he'd REALLY be in trouble.

Ariel said...

Brilliant. The post obviously, not the result of the case. That is repulsive. Nothing surprises me these days, unfortunately. Otherwise I would be shocked. Poor Brooke. It must have been so hard to take him to court in the first place. I hope he never gets another job.

Mars said...

i love the way one of his "17 ‘extraordinary’ references" were from his parents! how extremely partial they must be.

Sakura said...

Unbelievable. When I read on the net that he got away with abusing Brooke I was shocked and then a few seconds later not shocked at all.

I agree it shows how little women are respected in Australia. Smarmy little git newton is.

Great post.

Great post Audrey. I wish it looked like that in the news.

How she can "wish him only happiness and success" I don't know.
I would also like to say, nervous breakdown my arse.

The worst thing is that it discourages women to take bastards such as him to court.

Oh, and how nice that he apologised through his lawyer. Yeah, funny timing mate.

Brill post - spot on. And yet they still play those ads throughout!!

kiki said...

top work audrette, it is disgusting. i think he should be publicly shamed. like in the good old days (medieval).

audrey said...

amanda - I actually worked on the post for a few hours because I had to keep flitting between 'work' things. I must say though, it gives me a pleasing glow in my tummy to know that I'm your first port of call for riot grrl ranting! And you're right - there's just no part of this story that is okay.

rebekka - And a mentalist apparently.

mrs franz - Oh my dumbledore, you are spot on. It's despicable the way the media and the 'system' treats violence against women. It's sort of accepted generally to be wrong, but there are all these mitigating circumstances like where the man was emotionally at the time or what the woman did to provoke it. It's absolutely disgusting. Do people ask children what they were wearing when they were raped? I know that's off topic to La Newton, but still pertinent considering the general attitude to violence against women. Also, I don't see Newton offering to be a poster boy for Women's Centres.

susanna - He's a smug git, isn't he?

mskp - Oh, I'm sure the AFP could dig something up if they wanted to. And if he wasn't white.

ariel - I know. The poor wee bumblebee. It sickens me to think that the court determined his career to be more important than her justice.

mars - Makes you wonder whether 'extraordinary' means is describing him or the heft of the referees.

sakura - That's the worst part. That you're shocked for about a second before you realise it's really par for the fucking course in this country.

elenor bloom - I know! Face the fucking music jerkass and apologise yourself! What a knob.

boo - Like those ads mean anything. The 'watch out you don't get hit by a tram' ads are more shocking than the 'hitting women is a crime' rubbish they put on our tvs as some sort of pacifier to the women's groups.

kiki - I agree. If people can call for juvenile delinquents to be shamed, we can call for beaters and slimeballs to be dragged onto the street and pelted with rotten tomatoes.

May he never work another day in his life! Although I predict it won't be long before we see him back on Thank God You're Here, given their general attitude to women. Can anyone say 'token' contestant?

This is a work of art. I really think you should send him a copy

Dot said...

thanks Audrey, he needed a good naming and shaming.

audrey said...

anon - I'm working on something better..

dot - refer to above.

kiki said...

so you going to reference me when you borrow / quote my material?

audrey said...

kiki - Is it okay if I referenced you in my head when I wrote it?...

I vote for a public flogging - lets see how he likes it.

I'm waiting for it to appear on Family Feud.

Bert: "Name another word for...Assault"

redcap said...

All those pictures of Matthew Newton made me dizzy. I feel sick now.

Charlii said...

I'm angry, firstly must sue government for false advertising my arse "Australia says no to violence against women" more like "Australia says occasionally no to violence against women".

Also it goes to show how flawed and corrupt our judicial system. Can I point out the judge is a complete idiot did he seem to forget that Newton is an actor by trade of course he can appear remorseful.

It angers me that because of the injustice other men will get off because women have been given a complete lack of faith in our judicial system.

I think anyone that hires the little prick should be utterly ashamed!

audrey said...

killerrabbitt - My guess is that people would complain that it was too harsh a sentence. Because you know..he's sorry now.

b - That is the fucking funniest thing I've read all week. I can just picture Bert's stupid manic grin delivering it too.

redcap - Really? Would you say they metaphorically punched you in the face?

charlii - It's despicable. That this behaviour is normalised and excused is just so predictable in terms of how society treats women. We either exaggerated it, provoked it, or made it up.

Great post.

While I admire the passion and outrage at what's transpired in this case, I'm compelled to ask: where were you people when footballers were attacking their girlfriends?

These young men abduct women, kick them, beat them etc. They break intervention orders. They drug them. They pay them money to drop rape allegations. Yet they get left off by judges all the time. They turn up to work as usual without sanction. No contracts are torn up. Fans seem happy enough.

Where are the petitions, the mountains of vitriol, the calls for floggings? Where is the serious critique of the media and power structures in our society?

You have to ask: why does the public tolerate domestic violence in footballers, but not in TV hosts? Seems like a whopping double standard to me.
